Hello, folks! Welcome to my blog! Today i want to talk about education system in my country and education system in another country. This another country is part of ASEAN and specifically it's our neighbour. It's not Singapore or Timor Leste, and it's not also Brunei Darussalam. Almost there! Yep, Malaysia! On 2017, Malaysia got score 0.671 for their education index from UNDP and was ranked on 62 as their quality of education in this world, higher than Indonesia. Though Malaysia neighbours Indonesia, its education system is actually different.
Based on the level of education, some Indonesians start entered to school at the age of three at pre-schools. Malaysians start entered to school at the age of four at pre-schools although it's not compulsory. Malaysia's primary school starts at the age of seven and ended at the 6th year when they are twelve. It goes same as Indonesia's primary school.
In Malaysia's secondary school, they have five years to finally finish their secondary level and take public common examination, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in the last year of secondary school. If they want to continue their study in university, there are two options for malaysia's students. If they leave school with SPM qualification, they can get a pre-university qualification for one up to two years (as the sixth form, matriculation programmes and GCE 'A' levels) or study for a certificate or diploma at higher educational institutions. Indonesia's secondary school have six years, three years for middle school and then three years for high school. After students graduated from high school they're able to take SNMPTN, SBMPTN or independent admission test to pursue higher education.
Based on primary languages that usually use in school, Malaysia uses Malaysians, English, Tamil, and Mandarin. English is their second language after Malaysians. Education system in Malaysia is influenced by British's education system, since Malaysia's colonized by English. That's why some Malaysians seem like code mixing when they were talking. Their education prioritize the aspect of comprehension and analysis skills. In Indonesia, we use Indonesians as our primary language mostly in learning activities, though there are some schools that use English. They have been taught English (for example) since they entered pre-school. In Indonesia we learn English usually when we entered primary school in the 3rd grade although English isn't compulsory subject. In primary level, Malaysian students are given textbooks with Oxford International Primary English Student Anthology books to learn English.
Based on the implementation of curriculum, Malaysia has some curriculum that differently named based on the level of education. There are Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR in Malaysian's acronym) and Secondary School Standard Curriculum (KSSM). In Indonesia, we have Curriculum 2013, currently. The Curriculum 2013 applied in every level of education with the same name, Curriculum 2013.
So, those are some differences between education system in Indonesia and Malaysia. What makes Malaysia's education system is better than Indonesia probably also affected by facility or economy that Malaysia has. I hope these information is useful for you. I'll catch you later on the next blog!
