Book Review: The Power of Habits (Chapter 9)

Hello, everyone! Welcome back to my blog! Today i'd like to make the last chapter review from "The Power of Habits" written by Charles Duhigg . If you want to read my previous chapter review, you can go to here: review part 1 (chapter 1, 2, 3), review part 2 (chapter 4, 5, 6), review part 3 (chapter 7 & 8).

The last chapter or the ninth chapter from this book is part of the third part in this book. Here's my chapter review. Enjoy your reading!

Chapter 9: THE NEUROLOGY OF FREE WILL (Are We Responsible for Our Habits?)

Charles provides the cases of a murder and a debt gambling.

Brian Thomas killed his wife during his sleepwalking (sleepwalking was Thomas's habits). When doing so, the part of his brain that usually consciously processes behavior is asleep, but the parts controlling routine habits are still awake. It means that Thomas unconsciously killed his wife and has no control over his behavior. Thus, Thomas was acquitted by the jury. They believed Thomas had not consciously committed a crime, and was not responsible for it.

Angie Bachmann didn’t plan to get addicted to gambling. She used gambling as her stress relief when people in her house were out of the house. When she had bankrupt, she quit the gambling. But when her parents were death and she inherited with $1 million, she went to gambling again. Within 2 years, she had lost all money she inherited and debt with the casino, who had lent her money to gamble with. She sued and argue that she was uncontrollably over her habits.

Why do we more sympathize with Thomas's case but dislike the Bachmann's case? Because in Thomas's case, he didn't recognize having sleepwalking habits. But in Bachmann's case she recognized the habits and possible to change her habits. In addicts' brains, this is treated as a win, a near win is as rewarding as an actual win.

Kyaaa, we reach the end of this blog. This book has educated me with lots of knowledge i didn't know formerly. I learned that we can improve our bad habits to be a good one by reading to this book. I also learned about the habits of some big companies here. Another important reason is this book provides some research about habits. So, I strongly recommend you to read this book, guys!
Thank you for reading. Catch you later! <3
