Using Video Materials with Special Viewing Techniques

Hello, my bloggie friends! It's been a long time since i posted something to this blog. Today, i'm back with another topic. I'm going to share what i've got from a journal article i was reading.

The title is "The Impact of Silent and Freeze-Frame Viewing Techniques of Video Materials on the Intermediate EFL Learners' Listening Comprehension". It was published in 2015 and was written by Sara Shahani and Abdorreza Tahriri. DOI: 10.1177/2158244015585999.

Yeah it's a long title, isn't it? However, i'm gonna tell you the reason why do i choose this artice to be read by me. First thing first, i love listening, especially when the teacher using movies as his/her learning tool. And then, the article's title has arisen my curiosity about the viewing technique that they researched.

This journal article is structured by title, abstract, introduction, literature review, research question, method, findings, discussion, conclusion and implication, references, and author biographies. The research was taken in Iran with the intermediate of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners as the participant.

Now we're gonna jump to the introduction section of this article. I will make it as summary.

Listening is a basic skill in EFL/ESL context that's very important to learn, because it will also affect other developments of language skills. Using video materials is quite informative and effective to improve learners' listening comprehension. So that learners are able to incorporate with bottom-up and top-down features in order to advance their listening comprehension. Therefore, applying video materials with special technique should be an attention for teachers since they may increase learners' learning outcomes. In Iran, instead of teaching listening to the learners, the listening activity in the classroom is mostly being tested.

About the viewing technique itself, when the teacher is using silent viewing technique, the video is played with no sound included and the learners have to guess what the characters in that video are saying. In the freeze-frame viewing technique, the video is played with the sound, but the teacher will pause or freeze the video as it's playing and the learners have to figure out what will happened next.

That's all about what i got from the introduction of this article. I hope you find it interesting as well as i am. Thank you for your visit. See you later in another blog!

It's actually not a good way, i realized that. I'm trying to erase this habit. It's billion percent would be better to find a solut...
