Using Video Materials with Special Viewing Techniques: part 2

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog!

Today, i'm going to talk about the journal article i am reading. If you haven't read my previous blog, go to this link

In the previous blog, i talked about the reason why i choose this journal article as my reading material in my Academic Reading class, and the introduction of its article. Now, we're gonna talk about the literature review section of this article. Here's the summary.

Let's begin with the historical development of listening instruction!

Listening is always developing through years by years. In 1960s, the way to teach listening was influenced by Behaviorism, that makes listening was considered as a passive skill. But, it had changed when Chomsky critized that learning should posses mental activity and comprehension as the step of language learning which makes listening was not viewed to be a passive skill. During the 1980s and 1990s, language teaching began to use communicative approach and task based approach to teach listening. Culture was also considered to play the major rules in way of teaching listening comprehension. And today, listening skill has become an attention in EFL/ESL.

The difficulty in learning listening is that learners are limited of being exposed to the authentic language (Basaran and Kose, 2012). Using course books are not enough for them to improve their listening skills. Basaran and Kose (2012) find that there are some solutions to cope with this problem that is by using authentic communicative input (e.g. radio, video, songs, magazines, etc).

This paragraph below examine the use of video materials in the classroom to improve listening comprehension skill.

Weyers (1999) finds that video materials help learners to increase their vocabs and to improve their communicative competence. Moreover, Potosi et. al (2009) claim that video materials will make learners become familiar gradually with stress words, intonation, and pronunciation.

Those are the summary of the literature review of the article i am reading. It can be seen that the way of teaching listening has always been improving through years. Using video is one way to enhance learner's comprehension in listening.

Finally, we are at the end of this blog. I hope this information is helpful for you and you're also able to correct me for mistakes i've made above. See you in another blog! Xx

Most of them prefer to be silent than talking or sharing it to other people. I sometimes find it hard for myself to keep these problems. I feel like world needs to know about my problems. It's actually not a good way, i realized that. I'm trying to erase this habit. It's billion percent would be better to find a solut...
